Overview of the Centre

The SPESSCE Unilag is an initiative of the World Bank and the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Universities Commission (NUC). The Center is one of the six Centers of Excellence approved by the World Bank and NUC after competitive bidding by Federal Universities in Nigeria. The Center is located in the South-Western Nigeria and is poised to be the best Centers of Excellence given its strategic location in the nation’s economy.

The University of Lagos center for excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social: Standards Enhancement (UNILAG SPESSECE) was awarded in 2020, The vision of UNILAG SPESSECE is to attain national and continental leadership in human capital development, cutting edge research and policy development and implementation in sustainable Procurement, Environment and Social Standards (PES) to catalyse the attainment of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).  To achieve its vision, UNILAG SPESSECE is poised to mount courses covering five tracks of A-E in PES as captured in this section. The UNILAG SPESSECE is located at the commercial nerve center of Nigeria, and indeed sub-Saharan Africa and Africa to cushion the critical skill gap in these critical developmental needs area.

Procurement professionals, climate, environmental and social development specialists and compliance professionals are generally few in Nigeria (and the West-Central Africa region in general).  This is due to lack of academic programmes/curricula tailored specifically to addressing the interdisciplinary nature of public procurement, as well as environmental and social safeguards. Significant number of people in the finance/business, environment, natural resource and social sectors are discipline-trained and disciplinary-focused.  Lacking in inter-disciplinary orientation, there is an urgent need to build skills and expertise through training.
